Jazzing it up in Geelong

by Beth Davis

The Royal Australian Navy Jazz Band will be a highlight of the 2016 Yanmar Wooden Boatshop Wooden Boat Festival of Geelong, held at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club from Saturday 12th – Monday 14th March.

The Royal Australian Navy Band is one of Australias premier military ensembles. Its history can be linked to the various bands of the colonial naval forces, which were in existence prior to Federation, and to the Commonwealth Naval Force, which was established in 1901. Throughout its history, the band has performed for thousands of audiences within Australia and around the world.

Although the Royal Australian Navy has six bands in total across the country, only two feature full time musicians, with one being based in Melbourne and one based out of Sydney.

All members perform in the ceremonial ensemble for each band – a sight not to be missed in itself!

The RAN’s Jazz Band will travel from its base at HMAS CERBERUS to entertain the long weekend crowds on Sunday 13th March, with the first set beginning at 12:00 noon.
